University of Texas at San Antonio. The University of Texas at San Antonio is part of the University of Texas system. Second only to the main campus in Austin, the university offers programs and services to nearly 29,000 students in San Antonio and the South Texas area via three campuses, including 1604 Campus, Downtown Campus and UTSA's Institute of Texan Cultures. The University of Texas at San Antonio features 126 undergraduate and graduate degree programs-63 bachelor’s, 43 master’s and 20 doctoral degree programs. Currently, there are 10 doctoral and five master’s programs on the drawing board, putting the University of Texas at San Antonio on the road to becoming a doctoral/research intensive institution. University of Texas at San Antonio Athletics. The men and women of the University of Texas at San Antonio compete in a wide range of athletic events. San Antonio College History. San Antonio College began in 1925 as University Junior College. In 1926, control of the school changed from the University of Texas to the San Antonio Independent School District. The school’s name changed as well-to San Antonio Junior College. Twenty-two years later, another name change took place. San Antonio Junior College became San Antonio College. Three years later, in 1951, San Antonio College moved to its present location on San Pedro Avenue where five hundred students were enrolled. After a decade, San Antonio College evolved into a comprehensive community college through its occupational and technical course offerings. In the late 1970s, the name of the college district was changed to San Antonio Community College District.
